EMS Programme

Student mentors with newcomers Student mentors with newcomers The Enriched Management Studies (EMS) Programme operates as part of the conventional three-year Bachelor of Commerce or four-year Bachelor of Business Science degree and offers an enriched curriculum with significant extra learning opportunities to students selected for the programme.

What makes the programme distinctive is its triple focus on selecting youngsters with exceptional potential, partnering them with business through bursaries and providing a holistic, learner-centred educational experience. This approach enables students to develop the kind of personal confidence needed for good communication and critical thought as well as the attitudes and competencies needed to operate effectively both as students and in the workplace.

Since 1989 the EMS Programme has worked in partnership with business and related professions, to recruit exceptionally talented black students from disadvantaged backgrounds - who have shown particular aptitude in Maths as well as leadership potential - and to enhance their progress by offering unique opportunities to learn and to develop competencies that equip them to become top graduates, business people and professionals

The enriched curriculum, made possible by sponsors, enables us to provide a nurturing environment that can focus on small-group learning and the development of leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

Positive Results

Increasing numbers of EMS students are graduating and entering post-graduate studies each year. At the beginning of 2003, there were 311 EMS BCom Alumni, while postgraduate qualifications included Management Accounting Honours (24); Accounting Honours (64); postgraduate diplomas (9); MBAs (3); Chartered Accountants (15).

Apart from achieving far better exam pass rates than other students, the quality of EMS students' passes is generally far higher. This is demonstrated in the graph below, which compares EMS and non-EMS first year exam results in June 2002. Overall, 32 percent of the first-year EMS class were awarded the Dean's Commendation, compared with only 8,3 percent of other BCom students.
